You’ve done all the right stuff, but your site doesn’t look or work as it should in the latest browsers. You’ve written valid XHTML and CSS. You’ve used the W3C standard Document Object Model (DOM) to manipulate dynamic page elements. Yet, in browsers designed to support these very standards, your site is failing. A faulty DOCTYPE is likely to blame. This little article will provide you with DOCTYPEs that work, and explain the practical, real–world effect of these seemingly abstract tags.

When a float is contained within a container box that has a visible border or background, that float does not automatically force the container's bottom edge down as the float is made taller. Instead the float is ignored by the container and will hang down out of the container bottom like a flag. Those familiar only with Explorer for Windows may scratch their heads and say "That's not right!" True, IE/Win does enclose a float within a container 'automatically', but only if the container element

Some tips for choosing which CSS file to use in DNN for your custom CSS elements. I get a lot of posts asking about which of DotNetNuke's CSS files that a portal administrator or web designer should put their custom CSS styles in - especially when end users are customizing the appearance of our SideMenu and TopMenu modules. DotNetNuke (with a little help from HTML and CSS, of course) gives you a huge amount of flexibility in the layout and design of your website, web portal or web-based ap

The layout generated has changed significantly from previous versions. The main reason for change was to simplify the layout and in doing so make it easier to use. It no longer provides fixed width columns with fluid center or full length columns by default. This generator will create a fluid or fixed width floated column layout, with up to 3 columns and with header and footer. Values can be specified in either pixels, ems or percentages. An explanation of how inheritance works in CSS and why CSS doesn't need Object Oriented style inheritance. Many newcomers to CSS are confused by inheritance; this is often because they come from a background in object oriented (OOP) programming and expect CSS to work in a similar way. This document attempts to explain CSS inheritance and present alternatives to OO-style inheritance to demonstrate why it is not necessary.

I have always been a fan of using borders to add effects to a page or some on page elements. The very first full CSS "makeover" I did, relied heavily on the use of them to create a 3-D effect. The design was for the

If you are creating CSS hover states on an element using the background:url(images/ background .jpg); method, you can preload your hover state images without using any javascript whatsoever. If you do a lot of css work, you can tell that when you load a page with this method, the background image on the hover takes a second to load when you hover over it. This can be eliminated very easily. Here’s an example using a div that has a class of button:
